Prospective Students

Emily Zelman

My work placement was at 2010 Legacies Now, a not for profit society committed to creating sustainable legacies that will benefit all British Columbians as a result of hosting the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. I was fortunate enough to be working in two separate departments for 2010 Legacies Now; Sport & Recreation and Inclusion. In the Sport & Recreation department, I was mainly working on sport program development and sport participation. I was also given the opportunity to take part in 5 discussion groups involving all of the Sport Organizations in BC, aiming to achieve the collective goal of increasing sport participation in BC. In the Inclusion department I had the incredible opportunity of organizing the “Altitude Youth leadership Weekend” for over 75 youth across BC. The weekend was held at Camp Summit in Squamish and involved 75 youth, Olympic guest speakers and the Olympic and Paralympic mascots.

I also developed an application form for the Aboriginal Youth Sport Legacy Fund (AYSLF), and consequently was involved with program intake, selection and implementation. This work experience was very valuable to me as it gave me an opportunity to compliment my academic interests. I have always been interested in health promotion but was uncertain of how I could develop a career out of this passion. I was also given a lot of responsibility and I felt like my supervisors completely trusted me and valued my work. I am currently employed part-time at 2010 Legacies Now working in the Inclusion department as I finish my last semester at UBC. When I finish my degree I am interested in working in the health promotion field to not only increase participation rates, but to increase enjoyment for an active lifestyle. 2010 Legacies Now gave me an excellent introduction into this line of work and it certainly opened up many opportunities for me within BC.
